The Yellow Of Spring And Summer

The flowers around our house have been quite beautiful this year. Psalm 68:13 tells of the dove whose feathers are covered with yellow gold. The next five pictures show flowers that are primarily yellow/gold in color.

Day Lily

The technical name for this family of plants is "Hemerocallis" which comes from the Greek words - Hemera=day and Kalos=beautiful. If you look closely you will see a bee to the left of the stamen.Posted by Picasa

Evening Primrose

The Evening Primrose is native to America and was used by the American Indians as a food supplement. Today it is used for medicinal purposes. This is a dainty, light yellow blossom that blooms in early June here in Ohio. It gets its name, as might be expected, from the blossoms opening in the evening.Posted by Picasa

Coreopsis

The Coreopsis is the state flower of Florida. It gets its name from the Greek Koris=bug and Opsis=appearance and is called "Tickseed" from the shape of the seed. A bee seems to like this bloom.Posted by Picasa

Lady's Mantle

The Lady's Mantle has a faint yellow tinge and begins blooming in June here in Northeastern Ohio. Lady's Mantle has been found in gardens since the 16th century. It was originally called "Our Lady's Mantle" because the scalloped shape of the leaves was thought to resemble the mantle (cloak) of the Virgin Mary.Posted by Picasa
